Can I Use Someone Else's Ez Pass in My Car

Does your EZ Pass have to be registered to your car?

I'm about to go on a road trip and was going to borrow someone else's ez pass - is this a violation/taboo?

I've borrowed my in-laws EZ Pass before & we just called ahead & gave them the plate info for the car that would be using it. Never had an issue. If you don't give them a heads up they might think the transponder was stolen.

Most likely this is the answer. From what I gather since I just got 3 cars on one account for EZPass, the transponders we got were registered to those 3 license plates and "passing them around" would be a violation. I'm sure you could call ahead but if you're driving through multiple states, that may be a challenge.

I never changed the car my EZ Pass was registered to and used it up and down the east coast on 4 different cars over 10 years. Never had a problem. That being said, you're technically not supposed to do that.

I don't get it, as long as the toll gets paid, why do they care who's car the pass is in? As a non-car owner, why can't I get a my own EZ Pass to use in rentals to avoid the extra fee I get charged for using the rental co.'s?

I use my EZpass on my girlfriend's car, or other friend's car, because it IS mine and I'm a passenger on that road trip... but stopped a few months ago where I had a low balance, and it didn't go through (although we went through EZpass lane) which ended up with my girlfriend getting a $50 fine sent to her address registered to her car. It's possible, just make sure there's money on it!

Pretty sure the only issue that could arise is if the toll reader doesn't catch the transponder, which then triggers a photo of the license plate. I don't think it records a photo if the transponder works as it's supposed to.

If the plate is in their system, they just deduct the toll and that's the end of it. But if they don't recognize the plate you might get a fine.

Can I use my transponder in other vehicles? Yes, you may transfer a transponder between vehicles as long as they are of the same vehicle class. There are penalties for using a transponder in a different vehicle class (i.e. Car transponder in a tractor- trailer.) Please be sure that all vehicles using the transponder are listed on your EZ Pass account. You may register your additional vehicles on-line or by calling our call center at 877-743-9727.

so i would say, it should be ok as long as the person you are borrowing it from is driving a MV of the same class. but technically you probably are not supposed to be doing that

Cautionary tale. I forgot to update the license plate on my EZ-Pass when I got a new car. It didn't read a few times and I got fined for using the EZ Pass lane without a pass because the car wasn't connected to the account. They sent the violation to my house in the mail via the license plate info.

I've used about 10 different rental cars with my transponder over the past year. No issues.

I believe it's technically a fine, but it also takes 15 seconds to add another plate to the account if you do it on the website.

At least in Massachusetts, we now have all-electronic tolling. So if you don't register the license plate to the EZ-Pass, you'll just get a toll bill in the mail, rather than a big fine. (The tolls are higher for bills by mail, so you should really use an EZ-Pass with the license plate registered, if you can.)
